FY2022 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report

Compared to FY2021, Scope 1 emissions decreased, Scope 2 emissions 2 slightly increased and total Scope 1+2 emissions remained flat.

The reason for this is because SGL’s emissions calculation system is based on payment “amounts” and as such is prone to being affected by price increases. Based on price increases in recent times, emissions are likely in a declining trend in real terms.

*Scope 1: Direct emissions from in-house sources
*Scope 2: Emissions generated as a result of office operations, such as electric utility expenses

  Scope 1 Scope 2 Scope 1+2
2019 769.99 3,662.41 4,432.40
2020 738.64 3,520.68 4,259.32
2021 615.81 3,487.48 4,103.29
2022 400.29 3,707.84 4,108.13

Multi-Stakeholder Policy

Established in May 2024

Given the growing importance in corporate management of co-creating value with diverse stakeholders that include employees, suppliers, customers, creditors and local communities in addition to shareholders, SGL is endeavoring to collaborate appropriately with multi-stakeholders.
Based on this, given the importance of returns to employees and consideration towards suppliers from the standpoint that the appropriate distribution of earnings and results brought forth through value co-creation and the improvement of productivity to multi-stakeholders will lead to the preservation of momentum for wage increases and sustainable economic development, we will continue to promote the following initiatives.

  • 1. Returns to employees

Through efforts such as the priority allocation of management resources to growth areas, the development of the capability of its employees and the improvement of their skills, SGL tackles sustainable growth and the improvement of productivity as it focuses on maximizing value-added.
Based on that, using the earnings and results generated as a basis, we raise wages using adequate methods based on our situation at the time in line with our “Major Principles of Wage Determination.” In addition, for other general improvements to employee treatment as well, we also actively engage in education, training and so forth to help improve employee engagement and productivity. Through these efforts, we aim to make continuous returns to our employees.

(Individual matters) More specifically, with regard to wage increases, SGL will endeavor to appropriately reflect elements such market conditions surrounding the company and its employees. In addition, where education, training and so forth are concerned, SGL will tackle areas such as the improvement of employee skills by providing them with learning opportunities using online tools and implementing various training programs tailored to their individual careers based on an employee development plan formulated every year.
  • 2. Consideration for suppliers

SGL will continue endeavoring to comply with the contents of the Declaration of Partnership Building. Note that should the publication of the Declaration of Partnership Building be withdrawn, we will voluntarily withdraw the disclosure of our Multi-Stakeholder Policy.

SGL will continue to steadily implement initiatives for these matters while verifying the status of those initiatives.

Supply chain CSR initiatives

SGL Group has formulated the “The Sumitomo Corporation Group CSR Action Guidelines for Supply Chain Management” in order to fulfill its social responsibility alongside its suppliers and business partners with a view to realizing a sustainable society. We are seizing various opportunities to tackle the understanding and dissemination of those guidelines, including training sessions with participation by new employees and locally hired overseas employees, meetings with sales divisions and domestic and overseas regional organizations and meetings with employees dispatched overseas prior to their posting.

Note that in the event that a violation of these Guidelines is identified, we will first urge the supplier or business partner concerned to improve the situation and, if necessary, provide guidance and support as we request that the situation be remedied.
In cases where correction is deemed to be difficult despite ongoing guidance and support, SGL will review its transactions with the supplier or business partner in question.
