We at SGL pledge to grow sustainably alongside society by earnestly addressing various social issues as a member of society and making proactive contributions to society as one of its members.

Organization

In January 2024, SGL established its Sustainability Promotion Committee.
This organization reviews and approves measures to address companywide issues and other areas for the purpose of promoting sustainability management at SGL.
Under our organizational structure, the Committee makes reports twice a year at the Management Council, where resolutions of priority issues pertaining to management are obtained.

With respect to compliance, the Compliance Committee, which is chaired by the Representative Director and President, convenes regularly every quarter.

Materiality

SGL identifies priority issues that it must address and achieves sustainable growth through their resolution.

Steps for Identifying Our Material Issues

Informed by the international guidance of the SDG Compass, we identified our material issues (materiality) through a four-step approach that incorporates our proprietary process.

Specific initiatives by SGL

Save Resources & Decarbonization

Introduction of three-sided variable automatic packaging machine

By automatically cutting cardboard to fit each item and fully sealing each box to the exact size, this system reduces both the use and disposal of packaging materials while also improving loading density and transport / delivery efficiency.(Feb.2023~)

Utilizing Renewable Energy

Installation of solar panels

It generates 3,200 kWh per month and reduces CO2 emissions by 1.5 tonnes per month, while also serving as an emergency power source during power outages.(Feb.2022~)

Both Decent Work & Workplace Ease

Employment support for people with disabilities

We partner with a social welfare corporation that supports people with disabilities in building secure, long-term lives and careers.
In addition to using our logistics center for job training, we are expanding equitable opportunities ー including hiring ー to enable people to thrive in our workplace.(June.2022~)

Exploring our Well-being

Industry–Academia Collaboration with Chiba Institute of Technology ①

We collaborated with the Kurakazu Laboratory at Chiba Institute of Technology to explore workplace well-being through industry–academia collaboration. Together, we analyzed issues in the employee break areas of our logistics center—now over 15 years old—and developed a comprehensive renovation concept and basic design to drive improvements, resulting in a more comfortable work environment.(Sep.2022~)

Both Decent Work & Workplace Ease

Industry–Academia Collaboration with Chiba Institute of Technology ②

We collaborated with Chiba Institute of Technology to make wayfinding in our logistics center clearer and more intuitive. Together, we reviewed and redesigned signage for warehouse and shared areas, updating colors and layouts with employees’ color vision diversity in mind. These changes have helped create a safer, more reassuring environment across our large-scale logistics center.(2025~)

Visualizing GHG emissions for decarbonization

Initiative for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from international transport

Since 2020, Sumitomo Corporation and its Group companies have been endeavoring to calculate greenhouse gas emissions from international transport and have obtained third-party certification after establishing their own calculation methods.

Internal Awareness & External Collaboration

Booth presence at SDGs AICHI EXPO

As a member of the Sumitomo Corporation Group, we participated in a joint exhibition and showcased our initiatives to both create opportunities for collaboration within the Group and with external partners, and to advance internal awareness among our employees. (Oct.2023, Oct.2024)
